Levomycetin tablets instruction for use

You can buy Levomycetin tabs on this page

Levomycetin tablets are a drug with antibacterial activity. They are used to treat various infectious pathologies caused by pathogenic (pathogenic) microorganisms that are sensitive to this antibiotic.

Form of issue and composition

Levomycetin tablets are small in size, round in shape and yellow in color. The main active substance of the drug is chloramphenicol. Its content in the 1st tablet is 0.25 g and 0.5 g. Also, the tablet contains auxiliary components, which include:
    Calcium stearate.
    Stearic acid.
    Potato starch.
Levomycetin tablets are packaged in a 10-unit blister. A cardboard pack contains one blister and instruction on the use of the drug.

pharmachologic effect

The main active substance of Levomycetin chloramphenicol tablets is an antibiotic (generic name for chloramphenicol is levomycetin). It is able to suppress the growth and multiplication of sensitive microorganisms (bacteriostatic action) by suppressing the synthesis of certain proteins within their cells. The most active chloramphenicol has against several groups of bacteria:
    Gram-positive microorganisms are staphylococci, streptococci.
Gram-negative bacteria - Neisseria (including pathogens of gonorrhea and meningitis), Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Klebsiella, Yersinia, Proteus.
Also, the active substance of Levomycetin tablets suppresses the growth and multiplication of rickettsia, spirochetes, and some large viruses. Chloramphenicol has sufficient activity against pathogenic microorganisms resistant to streptomycin, semisynthetic penicillins and sulfonamides. The resistance to chloramphenicol in microorganisms develops slowly.
After taking the Levomycetin pill inside, chloramphenicol is quickly and completely absorbed into the systemic circulation. It is evenly distributed in all tissues of the body. The active substance of the drug in the liver cells is metabolized with the formation of inactive decay products, which are excreted from the body by the kidneys with urine. Also in a small amount, decay products are excreted with bile. Half-life (the time during which half of the entire dose of the drug is excreted) for chloramphenicol is 1.5-3.5 hours.

Indications for use

Levomycetin tablets are indicated for infectious diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms that are sensitive to chloramphenicol. Such diseases include:
Typhoid fever and paratyphus, the causative agent of which is salmonella, parasitic in the small intestine.
Dysentery is an infectious lesion of the large intestine caused by shigella.
Tularemia and brucellosis are severe infectious diseases caused by brucella and francicella with severe damage to various organs and systems.
Pertussis and paracottus are predominantly childhood infections caused by bordetella and characterized by a paroxysmal severe cough.
Meningitis (inflammation of the membranes of the brain and spinal cord), caused by Neisseria.
Levomycetin tablets can also be used in other infectious processes caused by microorganisms that are sensitive to the active substance.

Contraindications for use

Levomycetin is contraindicated in certain pathological and physiological conditions of the body, which include:
Individual intolerance to any of the components of the drug.
Pathological processes, accompanied by a violation of hematopoiesis in the red bone marrow.
Some pathological processes of the skin - psoriasis (chronic degenerative-dystrophic disease with the appearance of characteristic plaques or rashes), fungal skin diseases, eczema (chronic skin pathology, which is allergic in nature).
Pregnancy at any time of its course.
Children under the age of 4 weeks provided external use of the drug.
Before starting taking Levomycetin tablets, it is important to make sure there are no contraindications.

Dosing and Administration

Levomycetin tablets are taken internally without regard to food. After taking them, drink plenty of water. The dosage of the drug is individual, it depends on the type of pathological process. The average recommended therapeutic doses for patients of different age groups are:
Children under the age of 3 years - 15 mg of the drug per 1 kg of the body weight of the child.
Children between the ages of 3 and 8 years - 150-200 mg 3-4 times a day.
Children over the age of 8 years - 400 mg 3-4 times a day.
    Adults - 500 mg 3-4 times a day.
If necessary, depending on the type of causative agent of the infectious disease and the severity of its course, the doctor can correct the dose. The average duration of therapy with Levomycetin tablets is 7-10 days, if necessary, it can be prolonged.

Side effects

After taking Levomycetin tablets, side effects from various organs and systems may develop:
Digestive system - nausea, recurrent vomiting, flatulence (bloating), diarrhea.
The central and peripheral nervous system is the optic neuritis, the inflammation of the peripheral nerves, the headache, insomnia, confusion, visual and auditory hallucinations, delirium (a mental disorder that occurs against the background of a disturbed human consciousness).
Blood and red bone marrow - a decrease in the number of leukocytes (leukopenia), platelets (thrombocytopenia) and all the blood elements (aplastic anemia).
Allergic reactions - skin rash and itching, urticaria (rash, which in appearance resembles nettle burn), angioedema Quincke (development of edema of the soft tissues of the face and genital organs due to the release of the liquid part of the blood into the intercellular space).
The development of side effects is the basis for correction of dosage or withdrawal of Levomycetin tablets.

special instructions

Before starting taking Levomycetin tablets, you should carefully read the instructions for the drug. There are several specific indications regarding their application, which include:
The use of the drug for newborns is excluded, which is associated with a high risk of pronounced flatulence, diarrhea, progressive cyanosis (bluish staining), cardiovascular insufficiency.
