The drug Thiamazole is a drug for the treatment of thyroid pathologies.

Form of release and medicinal composition

The preparation Thiamazole is available in the form of tablets for ingestion of round, covered with an enteric film coating of a light yellow color, convex on both sides. Tablets are packed in blisters of 10 pieces (2-10 blisters in a cardboard box). Each tablet contains 5 mg or 10 mg of the active ingredient - Thiamazole, as well as a number of auxiliary components.

Indications for use

Tablets Thiamazole is prescribed to patients in the complex therapy of thyroid pathologies, namely:
    thyrotoxicosis;
    preparation of the patient for operation on the thyroid gland for its hyperfunction;
    preparation for therapy of the disease with radioactive iodine;
    prevention of thyrotoxicosis when prescribing iodine preparations (including with the use of iodine-based radiopaque agents).

Contraindications

The drug has a number of limitations and contraindications, so before starting therapy it is recommended to carefully read the attached instructions. The drug should not be taken orally if the patient has at least one of the following conditions:
    individual intolerance or hypersensitivity of the drug components;
    agranulocytosis;
    age of child under 3 years;
    cholestasis;
    granulocytopenia;
    lactase deficiency or malabsorption syndrome.
Relative contraindication to the use of tablets Thiamazole is a large goiter with a narrowing of the trachea on the background. With care, tablets are prescribed for patients with hepatic insufficiency.

Dosing and Administration

The drug tablets are taken orally after a meal. It is desirable to swallow the tablet immediately, without chewing or grinding, with enough water. The daily dose of the drug can be taken at one time or divided into 2-3 doses in equal amounts, but the main condition is the intake of the drug strictly at the same time.
With thyrotoxicosis, the drug is prescribed in a dosage of 20-40 mg per day for 1 month. Then the patient is transferred to maintenance treatment at a dose of 5-20 mg per day. Supportive therapy is mandatory supplemented with levothyroxine sodium.
When preparing a patient for surgery on the thyroid gland, the drug is prescribed in a dose of 20-40 mg per day until the euthyroid state is reached. Additionally, the patient may be prescribed beta-blockers and iodine preparations.
Patients from 3 to 16 years old Tirozol tablets are prescribed in an initial dose of 0.3-0.5 mg / kg of body weight, the daily dose is divided into 3 divided doses. If necessary, additionally prescribed levothyroxine sodium.

Use of the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Against the background of thyroid hyperfunction in a pregnant woman, the life of the fetus may be at risk, but hypothyroidism, arising from the use of high doses of the drug Thiamazole, can lead to miscarriage.
If it is necessary to treat hyperthyroidism in a pregnant woman, the dose of the drug is determined by the doctor individually. Before starting therapy, the doctor carefully assesses the ratio of benefits to the mother and the risks to the fetus. The drug is prescribed in the lowest effective dose, and all the time monitor the condition of the pregnant woman. After childbirth it is necessary to monitor the function of the thyroid gland in a newborn for a certain period of time.
Since the active ingredient of the drug is excreted in breast milk, the development of hypothyroidism is possible in the infant, so if it is necessary to treat a nursing mother, it is best to interrupt lactation or to regularly monitor the thyroid gland in a child when combining therapy and feeding.

Side effects

Against the background of oral administration of tablets Thiamazole, patients had some side effects:
    from the hematopoiesis - agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, lymphadenopathy;
    decreased blood glucose;
    from the side of the nervous system - a change in taste sensations, dizziness, polyneuropathy;
    on the part of the digestive system - nausea, salivary gland enlargement and increased saliva production, vomiting, stool disorders, development of hepatitis and jaundice;
    itching of the skin, redness and scratching, hives;
    alopecia, a syndrome similar to systemic lupus erythematosus;
    arthralgia;
    increased body temperature, not associated with infectious or viral infections;
    weakness, lethargy, shortness of breath.
If any of these symptoms appear, the patient is advised to consult a doctor for advice.

Overdose

With long-term administration of tablets in large doses, the patient gradually develops signs of an overdose, which is expressed by an increase in the above-described adverse reactions, an increase in the size of the gland, and the formation of goiter.
Treatment of signs of an overdose is symptomatic - the patient is washed with a stomach, appointed enterosorbents, and after them an antithyroid drug of another group is selected.

Interaction with other medicinal products

With the simultaneous administration of the drug Thiamazole with radiocontrast iodine-containing drugs in high doses, the therapeutic effect of thiamazole may be weakened.
Patients taking pills Thiamazole, it is not recommended to simultaneously take drugs from the group of cardiac glycosides before reaching the euthyroid status.
Against the background of the use of the preparation Thiamazole with beta-blockers, Reserpine, lithium preparations, the therapeutic effect of Thiamazole is strengthened, which should be taken into account and, if necessary, adjusted to the dose of the latter.
It is not recommended to prescribe tablets of the drug simultaneously with sulfonamides and myelotoxic drugs, since this drug interaction increases the risk of developing leukopenia in the patient.
With the simultaneous use of tablets with Gentamycin in any form of release, the risk of side effects increases due to the increased antithyroid effect of Thiamazole.

special instructions

Patients with a strong enlargement of the thyroid gland and narrowing of the lumen of the trachea on the background of goiter are treated with caution and as soon as possible, only to prepare the patient for surgical intervention on the gland.
If, against the background of treatment with the drug, the patient has complaints of shortness of breath, sore throat, foreign body sensation or lump in the throat, the treatment is immediately stopped and consulted by a doctor.
If, on the background of therapy with the drug, the patient suddenly develops jaundice, pains in the liver, changes in taste, nausea and vomiting, then the treatment is immediately stopped and they go to the doctor.
You can not stop medication on your own, you can barely feel the improvement, because in this case the probability of a relapse of the disease sharply increases and the patient will need to take high doses of the medicine.
Active active substance of the drug has no effect on the work of the central nervous system and the speed of psychomotor reactions.
The drug is not prescribed for treatment of children under 3 years of age, since there is no clinical experience and no safety data are available.
