Bicalutamide Tablets 150mg – Non-Steroidal Anti-Androgen

Bicalutamide is a non-steroidal anti-androgen medicine commonly prescribed for the treatment of prostate cancer. It works by blocking the action of male hormones (androgens), which may help slow the growth of certain types of prostate tumors.

Key Features

  • Available in 50mg and 150mg film-coated tablets
  • Non-steroidal anti-androgen – no other hormonal activity
  • Often used in combination with surgical castration or LHRH analogues
  • May be used as monotherapy in certain non-metastatic cases
  • Well-studied with decades of clinical experience

Composition

Each tablet contains: Bicalutamide (active ingredient), corn starch, croscarmellose sodium, lactose monohydrate, sodium fumarate, povidone, polyvinyl alcohol, Opadry white, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, talc.

How It Works

Bicalutamide binds to androgen receptors, preventing them from being activated by testosterone. This helps reduce or stop the growth of prostate cancer cells. It does not have other endocrine effects.

Indications

  • As part of combined therapy for prostate cancer, alongside radiotherapy or after radical prostatectomy (non-metastatic)
  • As monotherapy in non-metastatic cases when surgery or radiotherapy is not performed

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults: 50mg once daily in combination with surgical castration or an LHRH analogue.
  • Non-metastatic prostate cancer (monotherapy): 150mg once daily.
  • Long-term use is often required – at least 2 years as per instructions.
  • Patients with severe liver impairment may require dose adjustment.

Possible Side Effects

Some patients may experience: breast tenderness or enlargement (gynecomastia), skin itching, hot flushes, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, changes in liver function. Rarely, jaundice or heart issues may occur.

Drug Interactions

  • May increase effects of blood thinners (indirect anticoagulants)
  • Do not take with astemizole, terfenadine, or cisapride
  • Caution with cyclosporine, cimetidine, ketoconazole – may raise risk of side effects

Storage

Store in a dry place below 25°C. Keep out of reach of children. Shelf life: 3 years.
