Bisacodyl is a drug that belongs to the pharmacological group of laxatives used to treat various pathologies of the digestive system.

Form of issue and composition

Candle Bisacodyl contain active active substance bisacodyl in an amount of 10 mg. Excipients are semisynthetic glycerides, they are part of the suppository envelope. At room temperature, suppositories have a dense consistency, under the influence of human body temperature (of the order of + 37 ° C) they melt. The preparation is produced in contour cells in a cardboard pack of 5 and 10 candles.

pharmachologic effect

The active substance bisacodyl refers to the pharmacological group of laxatives. Its effect is realized due to such effects:
Direct irritation of the nerve endings of the intestinal mucosa, which leads to an increase in peristalsis (movement of the intestinal walls, aimed at pushing food from the upper parts of the digestive tract to the lower sections) and accelerating the passage of food masses. In this case, the liquid is not absorbed in full, and the stool becomes more fluid.
It blocks the absorption of salts and fluid from the intestinal lumen.
These effects provide softening of the stool with constipation caused by various impairments in the functional activity of the digestive system.

Indications for use

The main indication for the use of Bisacodyl suppositories is constipation-a marked consolidation of the stool with the subsequent impossibility of an act of defecation. Constipation develops in a number of pathological processes in the digestive system, which include:
Hypotension of the intestine - a decrease in the tone of the smooth muscle fibers of the intestinal wall, leading to a decrease in the intensity of peristalsis and stagnation of stool in the lower parts with their compaction. Hypotension of the intestine can develop with a number of infectious diseases, be the result of age-related changes in the body in the elderly, or impaired intestinal innervation by the fibers of the autonomic nervous system. Often hypotension of the intestine develops in people who have been forced to stay in bed for a long time (patients after a stroke, severe operations).
Functional constipation, which is a consequence of a disturbance in the diet.
Need for loosening of the stool in the presence of hemorrhoids.
Also, Bisacodyl suppositories are used to relax the stool for intestinal cleansing before ultrasound, intestinal radiography, endoscopy (sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy).

Contraindications

Use of candles Bisacodyl is contraindicated in a number of pathological and physiological conditions of the body, which include:
Mechanical intestinal obstruction - the presence of an obstacle to the movement of food masses through the intestine, while stimulation of peristalsis by means of suppositories of Bisacodyl can provoke the development of a number of complications.
Injured hernia, in which the loop of the intestine is in a hernial sac.
Peritonitis is an acute inflammation of the peritoneum, which covers the loops of the intestine and the walls of the abdominal cavity.
Any acute inflammatory diseases of the abdominal cavity.
Bleeding from any part of the gastrointestinal tract - the use of Bisacodyl suppositories in this case may provoke an increase in the intensity of bleeding.
Spastic constipation is a violation of the movement of food masses, caused by spasm (narrowing) of the intestine, due to an excessive increase in the tone of the smooth muscles of its walls.
Malabsorption syndrome (impaired digestion and absorption) of glucose or lactose.
Acute inflammation of the hemorrhoids with a risk of bleeding from them.
Acute proctitis is an inflammatory process in the rectum.
Insufficiency of the enzyme lactase, which is responsible for the digestion of carbohydrates with an increase in the number of disaccharides in the lumen of the intestine and a predilection for diarrhea.
Children up to 3 years of age - use of bisacodyl suppositories may lead to rapid development of dehydration (dehydration) of the child's body.
Individual intolerance to one of the components of the drug.
Pregnant and lactating women, Bisacodyl suppositories are used with caution, only under the supervision of the attending physician. Also in the case of hepatic or renal insufficiency, the drug is used only for strict medical indications.

Dosing and Administration

Bisacodyl suppositories are injected into the rectal lumen (rectal administration). To achieve a therapeutic effect, suppositories are administered once a day. In contrast to taking tablets, administration of the suppository is recommended in the morning, since the laxative effect develops in 1-2 hours. The average therapeutic dose depends on age:
    Children aged 3-7 years - 5 mg (1/2 suppository).
    Children aged 7-14 years - 10 mg (1 candle).
Children older than 14 years and adults - depending on the severity of constipation 10-20 mg (1-2 suppositories).
For preventive cleansing of the intestine for instrumental research, on the eve of its conduction on the same day, 1 Bisacodyl suppository is introduced.

Side effects

The use of bisacodyl suppositories can lead to the development of a number of negative reactions, which include manifestations from the digestive system - nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and swelling (flatulence). In rare cases, the appearance of impurities of blood and mucus in the stool. Sometimes an allergic reaction develops in the form of a rash on the skin, its itching or urticaria (rash and swelling of the skin, reminiscent of a nettle burn). With prolonged use, dehydration of the body and a deficiency of minerals in it develop. In case of appearance of side effects, the drug should be discontinued and seek medical help.

special instructions

Before using Bisacodyl suppositories, you should carefully read their instructions. It is especially important to pay attention to such special instructions in relation to their use:
The duration of the drug should not exceed several days (maximum 7 days), since prolonged relaxation of the stool can lead to dehydration of the body and a deficiency of minerals in it.
With caution the drug is used for children from 3 years old, pregnant and lactating women.
It is not recommended to use milk and alkaline drinks (mineral water) during the use of Bisacodyl suppositories.
During the simultaneous administration of drugs to reduce acidity in the stomach (antacids), irritation of the mucous membrane of the stomach and duodenum is possible.
The drug does not affect the speed of psychomotor reactions and concentration of attention, but in connection with the possible imperative urge to defecate, it is recommended to abandon the activities associated with the need for rapid reactions and concentration of attention.
In the pharmacy chain, Bisacodyl suppositories are dispensed without a prescription. In case of doubt or questions regarding their use, consult a physician.

Overdose

Exceeding the recommended therapeutic dose of the drug can lead to severe diarrhea, dehydration and loss of salts. Long-term use for more than 7 days causes dehydration, hypokalemia (decrease in the level of potassium ions in the blood) and damage to the renal tubules. In case of an overdose, rehydration therapy is performed - restoration of fluid and salts in the body by intravenous drip of saline solutions.
