Composition

1 tablet contains 5 mg of bisacodyl - the active ingredient.
Secondary ingredients: corn starch, magnesium stearate, glycerin, lactose, talc, sucrose, gum arabic, Eudragit S, titanium dioxide, Eudragit L, polyethylene glycol 6000, dibutyl phthalate, iron oxide yellow, shellac unbleached, bees and carnauba wax.

Secondary ingredients: Witepsol W45.

Form of issue

The drug Dulcolax is released in the form of tablets, in the enteric coating, No. 30 in the package and in the form of suppositories No. 6 in the package.

pharmachologic effect

Laxative.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Dulcolax is a prodrug. Oral administration of bisacodyl leads to its hydrolysis in an alkaline medium with the release of a substance that has irritating effects in relation to the gastrointestinal mucosa, namely, in the large intestine it increases the secretion of mucus, and also increases and accelerates its peristalsis.
Laxative effects develop for 6-10 hours during admission during wakefulness and for 8-12 hours with admission before bedtime.
Suppositories of Dulcolax in the large intestine directly affect the nerve endings of its mucosa, stimulating excessive mucus secretion, and also increasing and accelerating its peristalsis.
Dulcolax tablets, due to their shell, are resistant to the effects of gastric juice, so that the release of bisacodyl occurs in the large intestine with the release of an active, nonabsorbable metabolite.
Some part of the remedy (from 3 to 17%) is excreted by the kidneys. In the blood and urine, mostly inactive metabolites (glucuronides) are found.

According to the instructions for Dulcolax tablets, they are taken orally (inside), you can drink it with water.
Patients older than 10 years with constipation, as a rule, appoint 5-10 mg (1-2 tablets) in 24 hours. Begin to take the drug recommended with a minimum dose, gradually lifting it (if necessary) until reaching a regular chair. The maximum permissible daily dose is 10 mg.
At the age of 4 to 10 years, it is recommended to take 5 mg (1 tablet) in 24 hours. This dosage is the maximum allowable daily dose for patients of this age group.
In order for the laxative effect to develop in the morning, you should take the pill on the night before.
Do not recommend taking tablets together with liquids, products and drugs that reduce the acidity of the stomach (milk, proton pump inhibitors, antacids, etc.) to avoid the premature dissolution of the enteric coating.
To prepare the patient for surgery, radiologic or instrumental examination of the intestine and other similar procedures, appoint Dulcolax under the supervision of medical personnel.
Usually appoint 10 mg (2 tablets) at night, for 24 hours and on the eve of the procedure of the study or operation.

Overdose

In the case of acute overdose with Dulcolax tablets there are possible: dehydration, diarrhea, lowering of blood pressure, hypokalemia, electrolyte balance disorder, convulsions.
In the case of chronic overdose observed: abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, hypokalemia, urolithiasis, hyperaldosteronism.

Interaction

The combined use of high doses of Dulcolax with glucocorticoids or diuretics increases the risk of electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia).
Hypokalemia increases the effects of cardiac glycosides.
Simultaneous reception of Dulcolax tablets with antacid preparations, as well as with mineral alkaline water and milk, can prematurely destroy the tablet shell and, as a result, lead to irritation of the gastrointestinal tract.

special instructions

Do not recommend the use of Dulcolax for a long time, without determining the causes of constipation.
Prolonged use of the drug, especially in high doses, can cause fluid loss, electrolyte balance disorder and hypokalemia.
Loss of fluid through the intestine leads to dehydration of the body, with symptoms of thirst and oliguria.
Dehydration adversely affects the body, especially in patients with renal insufficiency and elderly patients, and therefore, when detecting symptoms of dehydration, the use of bisacodyl should be discarded.
When using Dulcolax, a small amount of blood can be observed in the feces, which, as a rule, is poorly expressed and disappears on its own.
Occasionally, the observed dizziness, as well as faints, against the background of bisacodyl use, are most likely associated with a vasovagal response to abdominal pain or tension in the act of defecation, and are not a consequence of treatment.

Children

The use of Dulcolax is contraindicated in children up to 4 years (for tablets) and up to 6 years (for Suppositories).

During pregnancy (and lactation)

With breastfeeding and pregnancy, Dulcolax can be prescribed exclusively in extreme cases and only on the advice of a specialist.

Reviews about Dulcolax

Reviews about Dulcolax vary from extremely positive to strongly negative. Some patients are completely satisfied with the laxative effects of the drug, others on the contrary note only increased pains, spasms and other negative phenomena. Perhaps this is due to the intolerance of some patients of the bisacodyl itself, or the improper use of its dosage forms.
It is worth noting that doctors themselves often prescribe bisacodyl for constipation and other similar conditions and are often completely satisfied with the result.
