Cream Dermovate has a thicker and more dense consistency, and is produced in aluminum tubes with a volume of 25 g. The main active ingredient of the drug is clobetasol propionate 0.05%, as auxiliary agents: white wax, purified water, cetostearyl alcohol, citric acid monohydrate, propylene glycol . The cream is packed in a carton with the accompanying detailed instructions.
Pharmacological properties of the drug
The drug Dermovate ointment belongs to the group of glucocorticoids of local action. The main active ingredient of the drug has a pronounced anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and antipruritic effect. Under the influence of the drug, the patient's skin edema disappears, redness and local hyperthermia are eliminated.
The drug is a way to penetrate the general bloodstream, and this effect is enhanced when using a gauze dressing with ointment or cream. This drug should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal, hepatic and thyroid function.
Indications for use
Dermovate drug in the form of an ointment or cream is prescribed to patients for the treatment of the following skin conditions:
Treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus;
Weeping eczema;
Atopic dermatitis in the acute stage;
Lichen planus;
Psoriasis;
Allergic reaction to the introduction of medications locally or insect bites;
Contact dermatitis;
Increased dryness of the skin, accompanied by peeling, cracking and the addition of a secondary bacterial infection.
Contraindications
Hormonal ointments and creams, in particular the drug Dermovate ointment can only be used as directed by a doctor. Before starting therapy, the patient should carefully read the attached instructions for contraindications.
The main contraindications to the use of the drug in any of its dosage forms are the following:
Individual intolerance to the components of the drug;
Rosacea;
Acne vulgaris;
Dermatitis and other lesions of the perioral zone due to the increased risk of atrophy of subcutaneous fat;
Diseases of the skin of fungal or viral origin;
Pustular skin diseases, impetigo;
Anus fissures and genital itching;
The age of children under 1 year;
Diaper rash in children;
Severe disorders in the work of the adrenal, kidney and liver;
Endocrine diseases.
Dosing and Administration
Dermovate ointment drug is intended only for outdoor use.
The cream has a thicker and thicker consistency, therefore it is prescribed for severe skin lesions. The ointment has a lightweight structure and can be used as a preventive measure against the recurrence of chronic skin diseases or with a slightly marked lesion.
The drug is applied to the skin with a thin layer 1-2 times a day. The duration of the course of drug therapy is determined by the doctor depending on the degree of damage and the severity of the clinical symptoms of the disease. According to the instructions, the duration of the course of therapy with Dermovate ointment should not exceed 3–4 weeks, since in this case the risk of systemic side effects increases. In the absence of the expected therapeutic effect, the patient should again consult a doctor, perhaps the treatment is prescribed incorrectly and a completely different drug is needed.
In rare cases, when absolutely necessary, the drug can be pre-applied on a gauze bandage and applied to the site of injury in the form of a compress. The duration of such treatment should not exceed 2-3 days, since in this case the absorption of the active components of the ointment or cream into the general bloodstream is sufficiently large. Compresses and dressings impregnated with the preparation are prescribed to adult patients for the treatment of poorly healing weeping wounds.
The use of dressings with the drug in children is prohibited, since the drug is maximally absorbed into the systemic circulation and can lead to the development of symptoms of overdose and inhibition of adrenal cortex function.
With a significant improvement in the condition of the skin, the dose of Dermovate ointment is gradually reduced by mixing an ointment or cream with any other cosmetic emollient. Thus, the dose of the drug is reduced daily, and the dose of the usual baby cream or other emollient is increased. Sudden withdrawal of the drug can lead to the development of withdrawal syndrome and aggravation of the patient's condition.
Use of the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding
The use of the drug in the first trimester of pregnancy in women is contraindicated. The use of ointment or cream in 2 and 3 trimesters is possible only in the case when the expected benefit to the mother will be much greater than the potential risk to the fetus. The drug is used in limited areas of the skin, in a minimum amount under the strict supervision of a physician. Prolonged use of topical glucocorticoid drugs during pregnancy can lead to intrauterine growth retardation. In addition, after birth, these children sometimes experience suppression of the function of the adrenal cortex or their complete atrophy.
Since the drug in small quantities can penetrate into breast milk, the use of Dermovate ointment during breastfeeding is not recommended. If necessary, lactation therapy is recommended to interrupt and transfer the child to artificial nutrition.
Adverse Events
At exact observance of the specified dose and recommendations of the doctor, side effects develop rarely in patients. When hypersensitivity to glucocorticosteroids or other components of the drug in patients may develop the following adverse reactions:
Local skin reactions - itching, rash, hyperemia, tingling, burning sensation;
Excessive dryness and peeling of the skin;
Atrophy of subcutaneous fat (especially when using the drug on large surfaces);
Increased hair growth;
Development of systemic side effects.
Drug overdose
With prolonged and uncontrolled use of Dermovate ointment and cream, as well as the use of dressings with the drug, patients quickly develop symptoms of overdose, which are as follows:
Itsenko-Cushing syndrome;
Violation of the liver;
Changes in the clinical picture of blood;
Inhibition of adrenal function.
As a rule, these symptoms are reversible and easily pass after drug withdrawal or dose reduction. If necessary, the patient is treated symptomatically.
Interaction with other medicinal products
Dermovate ointment drug is not recommended to use simultaneously with glucocorticosteroids for oral administration, as this may lead to the development of systemic side effects and overdose.
If the patient is already using any medications or ointments for external use, you should definitely inform your doctor.
