Indications for use of the drug Mometasone
Inflammation and itching of the skin in dermatoses (including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis), for which GCS therapy is indicated.
Active ingredient, group:
Mometasone (Mometasone), Glucocorticosteroid for topical use
Dosage Form:
cream for external use
Contraindications for Mometasone
- rosacea,
- perioral dermatitis,
- bacterial, viral (caused by Herpes simplex, Herpes zoster, including chicken pox) or a fungal infection of the skin,
- tuberculosis,
- syphilis,
- post-vaccination reactions,
- pregnancy (treatment of large areas of skin, long-term treatment),
- lactation period (use in large doses and / or for a long time),
- children's age up to 2 years,
- hypersensitivity to any component of the cream or to other corticosteroids.
Mometasone cream should be applied with caution to the skin of the face and the intertriginous surface of the skin, applied with occlusive dressings, and also applied to large areas of skin and / or applied for a long time (especially in children).
Dosage and administration
Mometasone cream is applied externally, applying a thin layer of cream to the affected skin once a day.
The duration of treatment is 7-28 days and is determined by the effectiveness of therapy, as well as the patient's tolerability of the drug, the presence and severity of side effects.
Pharmachologic effect
Mometasone is a synthetic glucocorticosteroid (GCS). It has anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and antiexudative action.
Side effects of Mometasone cream
Local reactions: burning, itching, paresthesia, folliculitis, acne, skin atrophy, hypertrichosis, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, skin maceration, secondary infection, striae, prickly pears. The likelihood of these adverse events increases with the use of occlusive dressings.
Systemic reactions: when using external forms of corticosteroids for a long time and / or for treating large areas of skin (total area of application more than the patient’s palm), or using occlusive dressings, especially in children and adolescents, side effects characteristic of corticosteroids systemic action, including adrenal insufficiency and Itsenko-Cushing syndrome.
In case of an overdose with Mometasone cream, depression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system (including secondary adrenal insufficiency) may develop. Symptomatic treatment is carried out, if necessary, electrolyte imbalance correction, drug withdrawal (with long-term therapy, withdrawal should be gradual).
Special instructions
In the absence of effect within 2 weeks of drug therapy, the diagnosis should be clarified.
When applied to large areas of the skin for a long time, especially when applying occlusive dressings, the development of systemic action of the SCS is possible. Given this, it is necessary to control the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system.
Avoid contact with eyes.
Propylene glycol, which is part of the cream Mometasone, can cause irritation at the site of application. In such cases, you should stop using the drug and prescribe the appropriate treatment.
It should be borne in mind that GCS can change the manifestations of certain skin diseases, which may make diagnosis difficult. In addition, the use of corticosteroids may cause delayed wound healing.
With long-term GCS therapy, the sudden cessation of therapy can lead to the development of rebound syndrome, manifested in the form of dermatitis with intense reddening of the skin and a burning sensation. Therefore, after a long course of treatment, the abolition of the drug should be made gradually, for example, switching to an intermittent treatment before it is completely stopped.
Due to the fact that in children, the ratio of surface area and body weight is greater than in adults, children are at greater risk of suppressing the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system and the development of Itsenko-Cushing syndrome when using any GCS local action. Long-term treatment of children with corticosteroids can lead to impaired growth and development. The use of the drug in children for more than 3 weeks has not been studied. Children should receive a minimum dose of the drug, sufficient to achieve the effect.
There is no data on the effect of cream Mometasone on the ability to drive vehicles and mechanisms.
Interaction
Significant drug interactions in the treatment of cream Mometasone together with other drugs have been identified.
