Composition
1 ml of the solution may include 20 mg or 50 mg of minoxidil.
In addition: ethyl alcohol (ethanol), purified water, propylene glycol.
Form of issue
Regaine is available in the form of an external (local) solution of 60 ml in a vial, with additional nozzles for dosed application (a nozzle for rubbing, an atomizer, an extended nozzle for spraying).
pharmachologic effect
Stimulating and activating hair growth.
Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
Regaine solution is a drug used to treat hair loss of the scalp (baldness, alopecia). The main effect of minoxidil is directed to stimulation and activation of hair growth in patients suffering from androgenic alopecia.
With external use of the drug, signs of hair growth were observed after a minimum of 4 months of its application. The onset of growth of the scalp and degree of its expression are quite variable and depend on the patient's personal response to the treatment. Regene 5% solution has a more significant effect on hair growth than the 2% solution of this drug, which was proved by the observed addition in patients of the number of gun hair.
If you cancel the ongoing treatment with Regaine, the appearance of new hair slows down to a complete stoppage of the process and within 3-4 months leads the scalp to the level observed before the onset of problems with hair loss.
The true mechanism of action of minoxidil in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia is still unknown.
When applied externally to the undamaged skin of the head, the absorption of minoxidil remains at a low level. In the systemic blood flow, on average, less than 1.5% (with a variability of 0.3-4.5%) of the drug from its cumulative dose is received. Application of 1 ml of a 5% solution of Regaine (50 mg of minoxidil) results in the absorption of only 0.70 mg of the drug. The effect of skin pathologies on the absorption process of minoxidil has not been studied.
The profile of the metabolic transformations of minoxidil, with its external application, has not been thoroughly studied up to this time. It is known that the drug does not bind to plasma proteins and does not penetrate the BBB.
With the termination of the use of Regaine, about 95% of the minoxidil in the systemic circulation is excreted for 4 days, mainly with the help of glomerular filtration with urine.
Indications for use
The use of Regaine solution is indicated for the purpose of therapy of androgenetic alopecia, to reduce hair loss and restore the normal level of hair in women and men.
Contraindications
The appointment of Regaine is contraindicated when:
observed dermatoses of the scalp;
pregnancy;
violations of the integrity of the scalp;
breastfeeding;
personal sensitivity to minoxidil and / or other ingredients of drugs;
at the age of 18 and after 65 years.
Side effects
Side effects of a local nature
Negative adverse events observed in the course of clinical studies of Regaine's effects were usually limited to the formation of dermatitis of the scalp skin. Much less marked development of more pronounced manifestations of dermatitis, characterized by peeling, redness and inflammation.
Episodically observed itching of the scalp, contact dermatitis of allergic nature, alopecia, folliculitis, seborrhea and unwanted hair growth.
In a comparative clinical study, a comparison of 2% and 5% of minoxidil and placebo solutions showed a more frequent development of dermatological reactions in a group using a 5% drug. The severity and nature of adverse side effects in groups using 2% and 5% minoxidil were almost comparable, although the incidence of adverse events was higher in the latter group.
Side effects of a systemic nature (less common than local ones)
Skin: facial swelling, nonspecific reactions of allergic etiology (including the formation of skin rashes and the emergence of urticaria).
Respiratory system: allergic rhinitis, shortness of breath.
Nervous System: Vertigo; headaches, neuritis, dizziness.
Cardiovascular system: fluctuations in blood pressure, chest pain, palpitations, swelling, changes in heart rate.
A direct causal relationship between the use of the Regaine solution and the formation of the aforementioned adverse reactions was monitored only with dermatological manifestations.
Regaine, instructions for use
The instruction for use assumes exclusively external application of a preparation of Regejn on integuments of a pilar part of a head. The application of the solution to other areas of the body is not allowed.
A single dosage of the external solution should correspond to 1 ml and be applied twice in 24 hours (morning and evening). The process of applying the drug should be started from the center of the problem area and then around the affected area, using the fingers or the packs in the package. A single dose of Regaine remains unchanged regardless of the area of the skin surface being treated. The cumulative maximum allowable daily dosage is 2 ml of the solution.
Patients who use 2% Regaine's solution and who have not received a satisfactory hair growth effect, as well as patients with the need for the fastest cosmetic increase in the number of hair follicles, can use Regaine 5%.
The greatest effectiveness of Regaine for women was observed when it was used in the middle parting area, for men - on the vertex.
Terms of use of the solution
Regene's solution should be applied only to dry and clean skin of the scalp. The choice of the method of application is directly related to the used nozzle for the bottle. In the case of application of the drug with fingertips, they should be thoroughly washed immediately after treatment of the head.
Attachment for rubbing
This nozzle can not be better suited for applying the solution to small areas devoid of hair follicles.
To use this nozzle, you must first remove the outer cap and the screwed inner cover from the solution bottle. Tighten the screwdriver to the place of the inner cover removed. While holding the vertical position of the bottle, squeeze it with the calculation of filling the upper chamber of the nozzle (containing 1 m) to the black line. Turn the vial 180 degrees and massage with the nozzle the problem areas of the scalp to cover the entire area of alopecia, until the upper chamber is completely emptied. After using the solution, put the outer cap on the vial.
Spray
This nozzle is best suited for treatment with a solution of large areas of the scalp.
To use this nozzle, you must first remove the outer cap and the screwed inner cover from the solution bottle. Tighten the cap securely to the place of the inner cover removed. Remove the transparent cap from the spray gun, thus releasing the head of the nozzle. Guide the head to the center of the problem area and press the spray valve. Using the tips of your fingers distribute the solution throughout the area of alopecia. The above operation should be repeated 6 times, in order to apply a full dose of 1 ml. Avoid inhalation and contact with eyes during aerosol application. After using the solution, put the outer cap on the vial.
Extension spray nozzle
This nozzle is most suitable for spraying the solution into small areas of baldness or applying it to the skin under the preserved hair.
To use this nozzle, you must first remove the outer cap and the screwed inner cover from the solution bottle. Tighten the screwdriver to the place of the inner cover removed. Remove the small spray head from the spray gun and fasten the extended nozzle onto the spray gun sleeve. Remove the small cap from the tip of the extended nozzle. Orient the nozzle to the center of the problem area and press the spray gun once. Using the tips of your fingers distribute the solution throughout the area of alopecia and gently rub into the skin. The above operation should be repeated 6 times, in order to apply a full dose of the drug, which is 1 ml. Avoid inhalation and contact with eyes during aerosol application. After using the solution, put the cap on the tip of the elongated nozzle.
Clinical experience of using Regaine suggests that the first signs of activation of hair growth appeared, as a rule, after its double daily application for 4 months or even more. The onset of hair growth, the degree of its expression and the quality of the hair depend on the patient's personal response. In a few cases, the original appearance of the scalp was completely restored within 3-4 months.
Overdose
Unintentional ingestion of the Regaine solution may lead to systemic side effects due to the vasodilator effect of the active ingredient of the minoxidil preparation. It should be remembered that 5 ml of a 2% solution of Regaine include 100 mg of minoxidil, which corresponds to the maximum recommended daily dosage of the drug for the treatment of hypertension, and 5 ml of a 5% solution includes 250 mg of minoxidil, which is 2.5 times higher than this dose. Symptomatic oral intake of large doses of minoxidil can be expressed by lowering blood pressure, fluid retention and tachycardia.
To eliminate the observed fluid retention, diuretics (diuretics) can be prescribed, tachycardia can be treated with beta-blockers, and arterial hypotension therapy with iv sodium chloride (0.9%). In this situation, the use of sympathomimetic drugs, such as Epinephrine or Norepinephrine, is inappropriate, due to their excessive pacemaking effects.
Interaction
Theoretically, with the parallel application of Regene's solution and peripheral vasodilator drugs, it is possible to enhance the existing orthostatic hypotension, but at this time without clinical confirmation of this interaction.
In case of using Regaine and parallel intake of minoxidil inwards for the purpose of therapy of arterial hypertension, it is theoretically possible to increase its serum content insignificantly, although relevant clinical studies in this direction have not been carried out.
The administration of Regaine solution to patients suffering from hypertension and taking guanethidine or its derivatives is possible only under constant medical supervision.
It is proved that the solution interacts with some other external (local) drugs. Thus, the combined use of Regaine and 0.05% cream containing betamethasone reduced the absorption of minoxidil, and the parallel use of external agents with dithranol and tretinoin, causing changes in their protective functions in the skin, may increase the absorption of minoxidil.

special instructions
Before starting therapy with the use of the drug Regaine, potential patients should be assigned a general examination with the collection and study of medical history. In the case of a positive assessment of the general condition of the patient, it is necessary to examine the integument of the scalp and ensure their integrity.
Until now, with external application of Regaine, the following effects have not been observed, however, due to the penetration of a small amount of minoxidil into the systemic circulation, the following negative manifestations are potentially possible: salt and water retention, tachycardia, local and generalized edema, angina pectoris, effusion and pericardial tamponade, increased hypotension caused by the use of certain antihypertensive drugs.
Throughout Reagaine's therapy, patients are required to undergo periodic examinations to identify possible adverse systemic side effects of minoxidil. In the case of detection of such phenomena, therapy is suspended until their causes are clarified.
Patients with pathologies of the cardiovascular system in the anamnesis, when using Regain, it is necessary to warn about the potential for exacerbation of their observed diseases.
When systemic side effects or severe skin reactions occur, patients should cancel the drug and consult a doctor.
The safety and effectiveness of the use of the drug Regaine for the treatment of persons under 18 and after 65 years, as well as for the treatment of patients with dermatoses and disorders of the scalp, is unknown.
The ethyl alcohol included in the solution, if it gets into the eye mucosa, can cause irritation and inflammation. In such a situation, immediately flush eyes with large amounts of cold water.
With oral administration of the solution, there is a high probability of serious adverse effects, mainly from the cardiovascular system (including tachycardia, fluid retention, blood pressure drop). In this regard, the storage of the drug requires a place inaccessible to children.
Children
The drug Regaine is not prescribed in the children's age group (under 18 years of age).
In pregnancy and lactation
Do not use Regaine solution for breastfeeding and pregnancy.
Reviews about Regaine
Opinions about this drug used to treat alopecia (baldness) were divided approximately equally and, in the vast majority of cases, the evaluation of this drug comes from the representatives of the beautiful half of humanity. Comments of women about Regeyne are quite diverse. For some, this solution became simply a "savior", others helped to stop hair loss, and the third did not bring anything except for the loss of time and money. Reviews of men about the drug Regaine in general do not differ from the opinions of women and talk about the fairly selective effects of this drug.
