Release form and composition of the drug

Dexamethasone is available in several dosage forms. Dexamethasone tablets are intended for oral use and are available in blisters of 10 pieces or in dark glass bottles of 10 pieces in a carton box with a detailed description of the use.
Each tablet contains 500 µg of the main active ingredient - dexamethasone, as well as auxiliary components.

Pharmacological properties of the drug

Dexamethasone tablets have a pronounced anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous and anti-allergic effect on the body.
When ingested, the active ingredient of the drug is rapidly absorbed through the mucous membranes of the digestive tract into the common bloodstream. The therapeutic effect develops within 40 minutes and lasts for several hours. If necessary, the immediate effect of Dexamethasone is administered to the patient intravenously or intramuscularly in the form of a solution.

Dosage and administration

The dose of the drug Dexamethasone in the form of tablets is determined by the doctor on an individual basis for each individual patient.
The initial dose of the drug for patients older than 14 years is from 500 micrograms per day, that is, 1 tablet. Gradually, if necessary, increase the dose to 2-3 tablets. The drug is taken with food, not chewed and not chopped, drinking plenty of liquids. The daily dose of the drug is divided into several doses.
The doctor calculates the daily dose for children on the basis of body weight, the general condition of the patient, individual tolerance.
When the required therapeutic effect is achieved, the daily dose of the drug is reduced gradually, since with abrupt cancellation of therapy, the patient develops withdrawal syndrome and suppresses the function of the adrenal cortex.
If necessary, long-term treatment with dexamethasone tablets in patients between medications prescribed antacids to prevent irritation of the mucous membrane of the alimentary canal.

Use of the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding

The drug Dexamethasone, as a rule, is not prescribed to pregnant women in the first trimester, as this may adversely affect the process of laying the internal organs of the embryo.
The use of this drug in the 2 and 3 trimesters is possible only under strict indications under the supervision of a physician. During the period of use of the drug, especially in high doses, depression of the functioning of the adrenal cortex in the newborn and deceleration of intrauterine growth of the fetus was sometimes observed.
Dexamethasone is not used to treat nursing mothers. If necessary, therapy with pills lactation is recommended to stop.

Side effects

Subject to the recommendations of the doctor and the indicated dosage, as a rule, Dexamethasone tablets are well tolerated by patients. In some cases, the following side effects may develop:
    On the part of the digestive system - nausea, vomiting, abnormal stool, pain in the epigastric region, liver enlargement;
    On the part of the heart and blood vessels - increased blood pressure, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmia;
    On the part of the nervous system - sleep disturbance, dizziness, anxiety, in rare cases, convulsions;
    Increased intraocular pressure, impaired vision;
    Obesity, the appearance of a strong appetite, rapid weight gain;
    Osteoporosis, muscle weakness;
    Changes in the clinical picture of blood;
    Allergic skin reactions.

Drug overdose

With too long use of Dexamethasone tablets or a significant excess of the dose recommended by the doctor, patients develop an overdose of the drug. These symptoms are manifested in the enhancement of the above-described side effects, the development of severe hepatic and renal failure, and inhibition of the functioning of the adrenal cortex. If negative effects appear during treatment with the drug, the patient should immediately consult a doctor. As a rule, treatment of overdose with pills consists in washing the stomach and performing symptomatic therapy. If necessary, the patient is dialysis.

The interaction of the drug with other drugs

Dexamethasone tablets are not recommended to be prescribed to the patient simultaneously with drugs from the group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, as this dramatically increases the likelihood of severe side effects from the organs of the alimentary canal. If necessary, the parallel use of these drugs to patients between their intakes prescribe antacid substances that will protect the mucous membranes of the digestive tract from irritation.
With the simultaneous use of this drug with antibiotics from the group of macrolides in patients in the blood there is an increase in the concentration of dexamethasone, which can provoke the development of side effects.
This drug is not recommended to be combined with oral contraceptive pills, since the interaction of these drugs increases the risk of side effects and disorders of the liver.
Under the influence of the drug Dexamethasone, the therapeutic effect of hypoglycemic drugs, diuretics, antihypertensive drugs is reduced, therefore, if they are used at the same time, the patient needs a dose adjustment of these drugs.

special instructions

During the period of drug treatment, patients should regularly monitor the condition of the liver, kidneys and blood parameters.
Dexamethasone therapy should not be stopped abruptly, as this may provoke an exacerbation of the condition and development of the so-called withdrawal syndrome. The daily dose of the drug is reduced gradually over 1-2 weeks.
With caution, the drug is prescribed for elderly people. When using tablets in patients older than 65 years, it is necessary to regularly check the functioning of the liver and kidneys, monitor blood counts.
When using the drug Dexamethasone in adolescents during puberty, it is necessary to strictly control the growth of the patient.
