Composition

In 1 ml of eye drops, Maxidex contains 1 mg of dexamethasone, inactive excipients: 0.5% hydroxypropylmethylcellulose and distilled water, as preservative 0.01% benzalkonium chloride.

Form of issue

Eye drops of Maxidex are produced in 5 ml dropper bottles with a Drop Tainer dispenser.

pharmachologic effect

Glucocorticoid, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Dexamethasone is inherently a glucocorticosteroid (SCS) that does not have mineralocorticoid activity, but is able to exert a pronounced anti-inflammatory and antiallergic effect, prevent or relieve allergic reactions (desensitizing effect). Active suppression of inflammatory processes occurs due to inhibition of eosinophilus ejection by inflammatory mediators, as well as migration of mast cells, which reduces the permeability of capillaries.

Indications for use

Ointment and eye drops are recommended for use:
    with allergic blepharitis, conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis;
    with acute or chronic iritis, iridocyclitis;
    with thermal and chemical burns after corneal epithelization is completed;
    and also for the prevention and treatment of inflammation in the postoperative period.

Contraindications

    hypersensitivity to dexamethasone and other constituent inactive components;
    dendritic keratitis caused by herpes simplex virus;
    varicella, other viral diseases of the conjunctiva and cornea;
    mycobacterial and fungal infections of the eye;
    acute stages of purulent eye diseases.

Side effects

Long-term use of steroid drugs can cause an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP), as well as the subsequent development of glaucoma. Because of this, the development of characteristic lesions of the optic nerve, the development of posterior subcapsular cataract, and changes in the visual fields are possible. Therefore it is recommended when using the drug for more than 10 days to regularly measure IOP. In addition, diseases leading to a thinning of the cornea, sclera, perforation of the fibrous membrane as a side effect cause a slowdown in the healing process of wounds.
Perhaps the emergence of fungal damage to the cornea, especially when long-term use of steroid drugs. If the cornea has non-healing ulcers after a long course of treatment with steroids, this may be evidence of fungal invasion.

Interaction

At acute stages of purulent eye diseases, glucocorticosteroids mask or enhance the development of the existing infectious process.
