The drug Imodium refers to the group of antidiarrheal agents and is prescribed to patients for the symptomatic treatment of acute digestive disorders.
Form of formulation and composition of the preparation
Imodium is available in the form of tablets and capsules for oral administration. Tablets are sold in blister packs of 10 pieces of 1-2 in a cardboard package, capsules in blisters of 6 pieces in a cardboard box with the attached detailed description.
The main active ingredient of the drug is loperamide hydrochloride - 2 mg in 1 tablet or capsule. As auxiliary components are: mannitol, gelatin, flavor, sodium bicarbonate.
Pharmacological properties of the drug
Imodium is a medicinal product with a pronounced antidiarrhoeal effect. After taking the drug inside, the therapeutic effect develops after 15-30 minutes and lasts up to 6 hours. Under the influence of loperamide, the motor activity of the smooth muscles of the intestines decreases, the release of acetylcholine and prostaglandin increases, which increases the duration of the movement of stool masses through the intestine. In addition, under the influence of the active active substance of the drug, the muscle tone of the anal sphincter increases.
Indications for use
The drug Imodium is prescribed to patients for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, as well as to persons with ileostomy for the purpose of stool correction.
Contraindications to use
Before taking the drug, the patient is recommended to study in detail the accompanying instructions, since Imodium capsules and tablets have a number of the following contraindications:
Acute poisoning caused by salmonella, shigella, E. coli, dysentery;
Acute intestinal obstruction or suspected of it;
Ulcerative colitis in acute form;
Diverticulosis;
Diarrhea due to prolonged use of antibiotics;
Age of children under 6;
Individual intolerance to the components of the drug;
The period of breastfeeding;

This drug should be taken with extreme caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
Dosing and Administration
The drug Imodium in the form of capsules and tablets is intended for oral administration. The tablet should be put under the tongue and keep in the mouth until completely dissolved, if necessary, drink with water. The preparation in the form of capsules is better not to open, immediately swallowing and squeezed with a sufficient amount of liquid. According to the instructions, adults and children over 12 years of age are prescribed 2 tablets or capsules once. With repeated liquid stools continue to take 1 tablet (capsule) of the drug after each evacuation of the intestine until the complete cessation of diarrhea. Children from 6 years are prescribed 1 Imodium tablet once, then 1 after each liquid stool until the state is normal.
To treat chronic diarrhea with a weak tone of the anal sphincter, adult patients are prescribed 2 capsules or Imodium tablets once a day. If necessary, increase the dose under the supervision of a doctor.

Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Side effects

On the part of the digestive tract organs - constipation, increased gas formation, abdominal pain, intestinal spasms, nausea, vomiting, excessive dryness in the mouth, in rare cases, the development of intestinal obstruction;

Allergic reactions - a rash, itching of the skin, hyperemia, swelling of the mucous membranes.

An overdose of the drug
When ingesting large doses of the drug, the patient quickly develops signs of overdose, which are manifested by the following symptoms:
Oppression of the central nervous system - confusion, violation of coordination of movements, drowsiness and apathy, weakness;
Disturbance of respiratory function;
Development of acute intestinal obstruction;
Miosis.
Most often, overdose symptoms are observed in children. Treatment consists in an urgent rinsing of the stomach, inside the patient is given to take activated charcoal or other enterosorbents. If necessary, symptomatic therapy is performed, with respiratory depression, artificial ventilation is provided. Antidote of Imodium is naloxone, however it is effective only if after taking the drug inside it took no more than 3 hours.
