Loperamide is a drug that is prescribed to patients for the rapid elimination of an intestinal disorder, in particular diarrhea.

Form of formulation and composition of the preparation

Loperamide is available in the form of tablets for oral administration in white in blister packs of 10 in a cardboard box. The box contains a detailed instruction with a description.
Each tablet contains 2 mg of active active ingredient - Loperamide hydrochloride, as well as a number of auxiliary chemicals.

Pharmacological properties of the drug

Loperamide is an antidiarrhoeic remedy. When the pill is taken inside, the active ingredient acts directly in the walls of the intestine, reducing its motility and provoking the release of prostaglandins - substances that relax smooth muscle. Under the influence of the drug, the time interval for the movement of intestinal contents into the rectum increases, flatulence, swelling and spasmodic pains are eliminated.
In addition to its main therapeutic effect, the drug increases the tone of the anal sphincter. The duration of the drug remains up to 6 hours.

Indications for use

Loperamide tablets are prescribed for patients for the symptomatic treatment of diarrhea of ​​various origins - emotional, drug, arising on the background of radiation therapy or eating a large number of products with laxative effect (apricot, plums, beets).
In addition, loperamide is effective in regulating intestinal work in patients with ileostomy.

Contraindications

Before using the tablets inside, it is recommended to carefully study the accompanying instructions, as Loperamide has some contraindications for use:
    Bowel obstruction or suspicion of it;
    Intestinal bleeding of unexplained etiology;
    Acute dysentery (as a means for monotherapy);
    Individual intolerance to the drug;
    Acute ulcerative colitis;
    Constipation;
    Age in children under 4 years;
    1 trimester of pregnancy.
With caution, the drug can be used in women in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy and nursing mothers.

Dosing and Administration

Loperamide tablets are taken orally regardless of food intake. According to the instructions, patients older than 14 years of age, the initial dose of the drug for acute diarrhea is 2 tablets, then, if necessary, take 1 tablet after each liquid stool. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 6 tablets.
For children from 4 years for the treatment of diarrhea appoint ½ tablet of the drug no more than 4 times a day after each liquid emptying.
The duration of treatment with the drug depends on the patient's condition and duration of diarrhea, but in general this period should not exceed 5 days. Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Loperamide tablets are contraindicated for use in women in the first trimester of pregnancy because of unproven safety and lack of clinical trials regarding the effect of the drug on intrauterine development of the fetus.

Interaction with other drugs

With the simultaneous use of the drug with Kolestyraminom, the effectiveness of Loperamide can be reduced.

Patients with severe hepatic impairment should be treated with Loperamide only under the supervision of a physician.
