Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Pharmacodynamics

An antiviral drug, an artificial analogue of a purine-type nucleoside, which has the ability to inhibit the replication of all herpes simplex virus (HSV) viruses, Varicella zoster, cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr. Acyclovir has the most pronounced antiviral properties against the herpes simplex virus of the first type.
The effect of the drug on viruses is highly selective. Thymidine kinase of cells infected with these viruses converts acyclovir molecules to monophosphate, then sequentially into diphosphate and triphosphate under the action of cell enzymes. The inclusion of the triphosphate of the active substance in the DNA strand of the virus and the subsequent breakage of this chain block the copying of the viral DNA.
In patients with pronounced immunodeficiency, prolonged or repeated courses of treatment with acyclovir can lead to the emergence of drug-resistant strains. Many strains with reduced sensitivity to Zovirax have a low concentration of viral thymidine kinase.

Pharmacokinetics of Zovirax cream

With repeated use of the cream with acyclovir, systemic absorption is minimal.
