Pharmacotherapeutic group: antiviral immunomodulating agent.

Pharmacological properties

Immunomodulating, antiviral, antiproliferative.

Composition:

Active substances:
    recombinant human α-2b interferon (36 IU).
Auxiliry components:
    alpha-tocopherol acetate;
    sodium tetraborate decahydrate;
    benzoic acid;
    methionine;
    serum human albumin, 10%;
    sodium chloride;
    glycerol;
    sodium carmellose;
    acid lemon monohydrate;
    95% ethanol;
    purified water.

Pharmacodynamics

Viferon gel has antiviral, immunomodulating and antiproliferative action. Suppresses the replication of viral nucleic acids. Strengthens the phagocytic activity of macrophages, increases the specific cytotoxicity to the cells of lymphocyte targets. Due to the antioxidants (citric and benzoic acids) and α-tocopherol acetate included in the preparation, the antiviral activity and immunomodulatory effect of interferon increases, which contributes to an increase in the effectiveness of the immune response of the organism to infectious agents.
Under the influence of the drug, the amount of locally formed IgA antibodies that prevent the attachment and reproduction of pathogenic microorganisms and viruses on the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract increases.
Thanks to the gel base, the prolonged action of the drug is provided.

Pharmacokinetics

Due to the fact that this drug is a drug for external use, the methods for finding out the pharmacokinetic processes in the blood, used at the present stage, are not sensitive enough.

Indications for use

    As a preparation of complex therapy of influenza, ARVI, complicated bacterial infections;
    Recurrent stenosing larengotraheobronchitis (in complex therapy);
    Recurrent herpesvirus infection (acute and exacerbation of chronic form) of cutaneous and mucous membranes, including those affecting the urogenital area;
    Herpetic cervicitis (in complex therapy);
    Prevention of influenza and ARVI;
    Prevention of recurrent stenosing laryngotraheobronchitis.

Contraindications

    Hypersensitivity or individual intolerance of the drug components.
In view of the very low absorption of the components of the drug, pregnancy and lactation are not contraindications to the use of the drug.

Dosing and Administration

In the treatment of diseases of the upper respiratory tract, the gel is applied to the pre-dried surface of the nasal mucosa or palatine tonsils 3-5 times a day, in the amount of 0.5 cm. A cotton swab or spatula is used for its application. Duration of therapy is 5 days, according to medical indications, the treatment course can be prolonged.
In order to prevent influenza and acute respiratory viral infection, it is recommended to apply Viferon gel on the mucosa in the same amount for 2-4 weeks, 2 times a day.
With recurrent stenosing laryngotracheal dysfunction, the drug is used in conjunction with other drugs. It is recommended to apply it on the mucous membranes 5-7 days 5 times a day, and then, for 3 weeks - 3 times a day.
In order to prevent this pathology, the gel is used for 3-4 weeks 2 times a day, the therapeutic courses are repeated 2 times a year.
In the treatment of herpesvirus infection, Viferon is recommended to be used when the first signs of the disease appear, or in the prodromal period. The gel, in an amount of 0.5 cm, is applied to the affected area 3-5 times a day for 5-6 days. According to medical indications, the duration of the course increases until the disappearance of clinical symptoms.
In the treatment of herpetic cervicitis, the gel is applied to the cervix of the uterus, previously cleaned of mucus, in an amount of 1 ml. The procedure should be carried out for 7 days 2 times a day. According to medical indications, the duration of the course is increased to 14 days.

Side effect

When using the drug, it is possible to develop skin allergic reactions (itching, urticaria, skin hyperemia).

Viferon gel is perfectly combined with all antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory agents, as well as chemotherapy drugs used in the treatment of the diseases indicated in the indications.
