Omnitus is a medicinal product in the form of a syrup, which is used for dry cough of various genesis (acute respiratory diseases, influenza, pertussis), as well as for suppressing the cough reflex in pre- and postoperative period, during the operation, in preparation for instrumental examination of respiratory system.
All drugs that can cure dry cough are classified according to their mechanism of action. Thus, there are 2 large groups of substances:
Acting directly on the cough center itself, which is in the medulla oblongata.
The acting are mediated through a local anesthetic effect or by turning off the sensitivity of cough receptors.
The first group of substances is divided into narcotic and non-narcotic drugs from cough. Narcotic representatives belong to the morphine group: morphine itself, codeine, dextromethorphan, dionine. Non-narcotics means:
butamate - preparations Kodelak Neo, Omnitus, Panathus, Panathus forte, Sinecod, Stoptussin (in combination with guaifenesin);
glaucin (in combination with ephedrine and basil oil) - Bronholitin, Bronhitusen Vramed, Bronchocin, Bronchoton;
Oxeladine - Paxeladine, Tusuprex.
The second group includes local anesthetics (lidocaine, the antitussive effect of which, when inhaled, significantly exceeds anesthetics) and antitussives with a mixed type of action (reducing the sensitivity of cough receptors).
The main component of Omnitus syrup - butamirate, which is an antitussive drug of central action, is similar in structure to oxeladin (active substance of Tusuprex, Paxeladin). It has a direct inhibitory effect on the cough center of the brain, as a result of which the cough reflex decreases. Also, the drug has a bronchodilator, expectorant and anti-inflammatory effect. When applied, Omnitus reduces the resistance of the airways and improves the functional parameters of breathing, and also increases the level of oxygen saturation of the blood.
The drug has nothing to do with antitussive drugs based on codeine and is dispensed without a doctor's prescription.

Special instructions and drug interactions of Omnitus syrup
Omnitus syrup is not used to treat children under 3 years old. From the age of 3, a medicinal form is prescribed in the form of a syrup, with 6 tablets;
during pregnancy, the prescription of this medication in the form of a syrup is possible only on strict indications starting from the 2nd trimester. In 1 trimester the syrup is contraindicated. Tablets during pregnancy are prohibited;
when breastfeeding, butamirate is contraindicated, since its safety in this case is not proven. If you urgently need it in the lactation period, you need to stop breastfeeding for the duration of treatment;
syrup is allowed to be used for the treatment of patients suffering from diabetes, since sweeteners in it are sorbitol and saccharin (sugar substitutes);
in syrup there is a small amount of ethyl alcohol (0.003 ml), which must be taken into account in liver diseases, alcoholism, epilepsy, cerebral pathologies, as well as in the treatment of pregnant and children;
it is undesirable to combine treatment with butamirate with hypnotics, tranquilizers, antipsychotic and other agents that depress the central nervous system;
butamir inhibits coughing activity, so it is not recommended to take it together with expectorant drugs, since it is possible to accumulate sputum in the respiratory tract with the likelihood of bronchoconstriction or infection of the respiratory system;
alcohol consumption is prohibited;
butamirate can cause drowsiness, as a result of which, when it is used, it should abandon the management of the vehicle and perform work associated with complex mechanisms.
