pharmachologic effect

Vicks Active Symptomax Plus is a complex medication used in acute respiratory infections. Vicks Active Symptomax Plus contains paracetamol, guaifenesin and phenylephrine hydrochloride.
Paracetamol is a non-narcotic analgesic with a pronounced antipyretic and analgesic effect. The anti-inflammatory result of paracetamol is negligible (the substance is inactivated by cellular peroxidases). Paracetamol lowers the activity of cyclooxygenase and disrupts the synthesis of prostaglandins and prostacyclins from arachidonic acid, thus slowing down the generation and carrying of pain impulses, and also reducing the excitability of the thermoregulatory center.
Guaifenesin is a mucolytic drug that increases the volume and reduces the viscosity of phlegm, and also facilitates the excretion of sputum from the respiratory tract. Guaifenesin lowers the number of coughing attacks, improves expectoration and reduces irritation of the respiratory tract.
Phenylephrine hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic agent that stimulates the alpha-adrenergic receptors of the vessels of the nasal mucosa. Phenylephrine hydrochloride helps to reduce edema and hyperemia of the nasal mucosa, reduces the severity of rhinorrhea and facilitates nasal breathing.
The effect of the medicine Vicks Active Symptomax Plus develops within 20-30 minutes and lasts up to 6-12 hours.
Active components of the medicine Vicks Active Symptomax Plus are normally absorbed in the intestine. Metabolized paracetamol and phenylephrine hydrochloride in the liver. Excreted active substances in the main kidneys in the form of derivatives and unchanged. The half-life of paracetamol reaches 4 hours, guaifenesin - 1 hour. In healthy volunteers, paracetamol is completely excreted within 24 hours.
Paracetamol penetrates through the hematoplacental and blood-brain barrier.
