If terbinafine is used in small concentrations, it produces a fungicidal effect against dermatophytes (Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis, Trychophyton rubrum, Trychophyton mentagrophytes, Trychophyton verrucosum, Trychophyton tonsurans, Trychophyton violaceum), mold fungi (Candida albicans) and a number of dimorphic fungi (Pityrosporum orbiculare). Concerning yeast fungi demonstrates fungistatic or fungicidal activity, depending on the species of such fungi.
Under the action of terbinafine, the early stage of sterol biosynthesis occurring in fungi changes in a specific way. As a result, there is a deficit of ergosterol, squalene is accumulated inside the cells, and the cells of the fungus are killed. Terbinafine acts by inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase, which is located on the cell membrane of fungi. On the metabolism of hormones and drugs terbinafine does not work.
